Gestational Diabetes – high blood sugar levels found during pregnancy. This condition usually goes away after the delivery of the baby.
Glucose – is sugar that is found in the blood that is a source of energy for cells.
A1c – is an average of where blood sugar levels have been over a two to three month period.
Insulin – a hormone released from the pancreas that helps the body bring glucose into the cells for energy.
Insulin Resistance – means that the body is not responding to insulin the way it should.
Neuropathy – damage to nerves which can be caused by uncontrolled blood sugar levels.
Retinopathy – damage to small blood vessels in the back of the eye.
Pancreas – a gland that secretes insulin.
Type 1 Diabetes – people that are no longer able to produce enough insulin for their body.
Type 2 Diabetes – the largest number of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a complex syndrome of multiple organ systems, and involves the development of insulin resistance leading to high blood sugar levels.
